Professor, Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of South Carolina
Dr. Sunil J. Patel is an experienced and accomplished neurosurgeon with over 35 years of experience. He was chairman of the Dept Of Neurosurgery for 22 years (2004–2026) and us currently a Professor of Neurosurgery and the Director of Neurosurgical Services for the MUSC regional health network.
Dr. Patel specializes in conducting minimally invasive surgeries for patients with brain, skull base and spinal disorders.
Dr. Patel earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his internship and residency in neurological surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina and fellowships in Skull Base surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, PA and Microvascular Neurosurgery at Nagoya University School of Medicine, Japan.
Dr. Patel has completed NIH funded research and has been extensively published in peer-review publications including the Journal of Neurosurgery and Journal of Neuro-Oncology. He has been an author in over 150 peer reviewed research articles.
Dr. Patel’s special interests include Pineal Cysts, CSF disorders, EDS, Medullary syndromes, Tethered cord syndrome and minimally invasive surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
